The American School for the Deaf (ASD) is pleased to announce the unveiling of their latest innovation, the Online Academy. The Online Academy will be the first accessible online education platform serving deaf and hard of hearing students from all over the world.
As the first permanent school for the deaf in the United States, founded in 1817, ASD is no stranger to pioneering new and innovative solutions to help deaf and hard of hearing students succeed both in school and in life. With the Online Academy, students can benefit from an education tailored specifically to their needs, regardless of where they are around the globe.
“For over two centuries, the American School for the Deaf has pioneered innovative solutions to meet the challenges facing deaf and hard of hearing students,” said Jeffrey S. Bravin, Executive Director of ASD. “This tradition continues with the launch of the Online Academy, which will connect deaf and hard of hearing students everywhere with ASD’s team of world-class educators and curriculum. The time for innovation is now, and the Online Academy will help prepare all students for futures in which they are all ways able.”
To best fit the needs of each student, the Online Academy will be a flexible program. For some students, it will be their primary source of education, while for others, it may supplement a student’s current educational programs. Through the Online Academy, students can experience more varied course offerings, interact with new peers, and explore language opportunities—all from the comfort of home. Tutoring may also be provided to help students excel in their current educational coursework.
As online education continues to expand, the Online Academy will also evolve with the addition of diverse course and curriculum offerings, looking to eventually become a comprehensive full-time online program. ASD envisions that this will include extracurricular activities, support services, and much more. The possibilities are endless, and the Online Academy is here to help support students and their programs with innovative curriculum and individualized support for Individualized Education Plan (IEP) specific goals to ensure student success.
